Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) first developed the Pilates method to heal and strengthen his own body. Born in Germany, Pilates was a frail child who suffered from asthma and rickets. Zen Buddhism. Pilates even watched animals and babies to see how they moved. Over time, he formulated a system—one that worked. In addition to becoming an accomplished boxer, skier, diver and prize-winning gymnast, Joseph Pilates was by the age of 17, modeling his ideally balanced body for scientific illustrators. Pilates moved to New York in the 1920s (meeting his wife and staunch supporter Claire along the way) where top dancers & athletes relied on his exercises to propel their careers to a new level. Originally named “Contrology - the Art of Control”, Pilates’ approach to wellness became known as the Pilates method. Pilates works. And besides, it’s FUN. The exercises comprise of rhythmic movements that flow one into the next, creating dynamic movement that energizes the body and mind. The method is designed to strengthen the body’s deepest postural (“core”) muscles to improve posture and develop long, lean musculature. The results last much longer than with other exercise techniques because Pilates works from the inside out and completely changes the way you move.

Yoga offers tremendous physical benefits. To simplify things, it stretches what needs to be stretched and strengthens what needs to be strengthened. Yoga builds stamina, corrects postural imbalances, and tones the muscles. Supplying blood to various parts of the body and flushing away toxins from all of those hard to reach places, yoga is cleansing and detoxifying. Yoga even massages the organs and the internal glands of the body that rarely, if ever, receive external stimulation throughout a lifetime. Studio 3 teaches a flowing style of Hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is designed to regulate the energy between the body and the mind. It is all about balance…hot and cold, strong and supple, feminine and masculine. This balance is achieved through pranayama (breathwork) and asana (yoga poses). Deep breathing is the core of each flowing movement and held posture. The sequences are challenging, but by breaking each pose down into pieces, students find themselves moving in ways they never thought possible. |
